Brandon was assigned to photograph Blooms Days at the UT Gardens on Saturday (his company is one of the major sponsors of the event). I had to take a break from working on my computer, so I tagged along and did a photowalk around the gardens.

We’ve actually done several photo shoots at the UT Gardens (as recent as two weeks ago), but sometimes it’s neat to go back to a familiar place without planning out the photos to take. (Does that make any sense?) And I’ll be honest. It was a challenge for me to take photos there without posing people on the park benches and in the flower beds. Big challenge.

I’m not much of a nature photographer. I’m not especially drawn to flowers and grass and trees—for me, I don’t like to photograph ONLY those things. I enjoy placing people against flora, odd objects in the grass, tire swings from branches… But I just don’t know how to photographically approach plants. However, I did give it a good effort. (Any suggestions on ways to photograph plants?)

I did find a couple of neat plant markers, and my best finds during the walk was a bunch of teacups arranged on the bottom shelf of a garden sink. I like fun stuff like that. And of course, I have photographs of flowers and some fun bird houses that were for sale under a tent of garden product vendors. I want this one. Oh, and I photographed this weird little fellow with his silly paper hat.

I’ll probably try another photowalk in the Gardens again later this summer and in the fall when leaves turn crispy and plant textures are grungy (I love grunge). For an hour expedition, I think I did fine. But now I’m planning a photowalk next weekend (hopefully?) in a raunchy part of town. I’m in desperate need to photograph some graffiti, trash, and broken windows! (Thank you Aaron Siskind for your influence!)

In the meantime, here are some pics from my photowalk:
